Prologue
Construction has occupied my days since the early 80's. A passion to create a unique support table for one of my most indispensable tools began 8-10 years into my construction career.
In carpentry, your miter- saw, arguably is one of your most utilized tools. Although nice and compact, a miter-saw requires a table (unless you like working on the floor). The table also needs additional structure to support items cut on the saw; subsequently, the nice compact saw is no longer compact with a bulky support apparatus.
My mission was to enhance the portability of the miter saw with a better table design.
(rather than upgrading to a cargo van)
Conception
1990 Around the time Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, I began perfecting a specialized sawhorse for a miter saw. My Army Reserve Unit became activated to support operation Desert Storm - Just like Operation Desert Storm was a mere bump in the road so to was my progress of the miter saw table. Upon returning home, I picked up where I left off. My modified saw horse was a huge improvement over commercially available miter saw stands, but like all other miter saw stands, my specialized saw horse still remained far short of "zero" storage impact. My saw-horse was still another tool taking up valuable storage space in my truck. Reflection upon my primary objective reminded me to refocus on the following parameters.
Table combined with tool storage on a portable platform.
Progress
Hundreds of prototypes later and a daunting patent process has resulted in an organizational, mobile, tool management, work station. Many hours have been spent simplifying the design for both functional and manufacturing reasons. "zero" storage impact has been achieved:
Joyfully eliminating need to store and carry a separate table for the saw.
Bonus: adjustable surface suits any bench-top-power-tool.
Second Deployment
Operation Enduring Freedom: still in the military I deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 to serve two plus years. I was trained in Counter Insurgency (COIN). I am very proud of my Country (and the several other Countries I worked with) of our accomplishments. My main focus was to train Afghan National Police to care for combat related injuries. My team also reached out to Afghan communities conducting medical humanitarian missions. I was recognized with a Bronze Star for the long hours supporting our Nations efforts in the fight against terrorism.
Many other Possibilities
Mobile Headquarters: While deployed, I could see many different uses for the Universal System and how it could be employed by the military. One possibility; simply assist our high tech military with e- portability (CPU case within a modular frame for desks)(acknowledged by DARPA of its overall simplicity).
The Facts
Construction time savings: the modular tool storage work station could save several hours over the course of the week.
Multifaceted time savings:
(1) combined tool storage /work platform (your tools get a free ride as you set up your table or your table rides free as you bring in your tools)
(2) organizational system tailored to individual needs - keeping tools centrally located. (organization has a direct relationship to productivity)
